Social pressure is good to a certain extent, it drives change but this display is kind of hypocritical.

I can guarantee that at least a fair amount of those protesters drove to that event... not sure how they don't see the irony here. Car manufacturers don't pollute the earth stupid, its you me and everyone else who wants 21st century comforts.

A lot of car manufacturing are going into the EV direction already.

i believe a lot of them biked there

I'm planning on buying an electric car probably in the next 3-5 years.

Electric cars will definitely end up being the typical car in the future. But there's no way sports/muscle cars will ever go away from the combustion engine. The sound/feel is just too apart of the experience. When you drive a Camaro/Corvette/Mustang/Porsche/Viper or any other muscle/sports car, you want to feel those cars , you drive those cars for the experience and a little bit of vanity to show your metaphorical dick.

Just misguided people who have their heart in the right place but not really.

Even though I agree ICE will remain in a niche, even in the motorsports/performance world electric is creating a buzz. The new Formula E cars are pretty ridiculous, and cars like the Rimac or Tesla Roadster will probably outcompete with many ICE cars.

Not to mention that durabilty and wear&tear in electric cars is so much better. The only component that has more wear in an electric are the tyres, which are often one of the cheapest components in a car, and easily replacable.

yeah who knows since younger generations tastes could very well embrace electric but I do feel like combustion engine will always have a place in cars because of the feel/experience.

The feel/experience is something you were socialized into. They might have a niche for the super wealthy, but at a certain point they're going to go out of style just like everything else. "Your car is so bumpy, why doesn't it run smooth like mine?"

80% or so of total pollution is committed by basically 5 corporations.

the idea that individual changes can turn the tide against climate change without severely regulating these corporations is nothing but propaganda forwarded by the very same corporations looking to skirt regulation.

let me put this simply, from only a first world perspective, if ALL (as in 100%) of private citizens reduced their carbon footprint to zero, we'd still have 80% of the same emissions we have now. and that level of emissions is not enough to pull us back from the point of no return.

want a electric car, great, don't let me stop you. want to install solar panels, good, i have some too so i can be somewhat more self sufficient. want to buy more organic produce and well sourced meats, good, i do too and i grow my own.

just don't get fooled into thinking your individual action changes the game. because the 80% figure above is just the 1st world, the 2nd/3rd world are still an issue.

Fossil fuel cars will only go out fo style if electric cars solve their huge technological hurdles, particularly the limited range, the long recharge times and the vulnerability of the battery to very low or high temperatures. Particularly in sub 0° C/32°F environments, the range of EVs suffers enormously!
Furthermore, EVs are only good for the climate if they are charged with renewable energy. Charging them with power from coal does fuckall for the environment.

So in my opinion, the future rather looks like a mix of electric and fossil cars. Electric cars in big urban areas where distances are typically short and within the range of one battery charge, and in smaller delivery cars which run a plannable distance per day.
Diesel for big trucks and gas motors for people living in more rural regions or far in the north.

In general, the farther south you are, the more available cheap and clean solar energy will be, and the less risk of seeing your range go down the shitter during winter.

i think the realistic range of my wifes gas car is about the same as an electric, because every time i get in there's between 1/8th and 1/4 tank left.

its like she puts in 10$ into an empty tank then says "my hands are cold" and gets back in.

one day i told her she could start the gas pump then get back in the car, and she gave me a look of a caveman seeing fire for the first time.
