Who determines what constitutes meaningful work? I'd think a doctors work is more valuable than an athletes but society has chosen otherwise by the amount of money they voluntarily pour into sports entertainment.

no, that's just flawed 'logic' on your part.

higher monetary compensation does not necessarily imply a higher regard concerning the 'value' of your profession. i'm pretty sure that a majority of people in your society would actually agree with you about a doctor's work being 'more valuable' than that of an athlete.

obviously that's simply not how markets works. high profile athletes earn more because corporations can generate more profit from their profession.
society (you included) will understandably rather watch a basketball match on television, interrupted by countless commercial breaks, than a live stream of a doctor examining patients and prescribing flu meds, but that doesn't mean the doctor's work is less important in their eyes.

What i mean is people value entertainment and pleasure over their own well being and this is reflected in how they spend their time and money. Would you dispute that?

Or is it that people have more access to a $20 baseball cap than they do to a $20,000 medical procedure?

The extreme wealthy & associated corporate are now working on making you believe that
- they are the only ones able to give you a job and offering you a future.
- they are now offering you a whole structure (education, culture etc...)
- You made yourself for real, and what you earned is yours. Property. (which serve them nicely)
- Your research on a new cream to grow dicks is vital to fight climate change.

The only thing able to counter this a well organized government representing the people and able to defend itself.
Some people are really not happy by all this and vote communist or far left, you can't blame them too much. Till they aren't reaching the 20-30%

i would argue that entertainment and pleasure are directly related to our mental well-being. i would also argue that if we had to make a decision between season tickets for our favourite team and a crucial medical procedure (which most of us in developed countries thankfully will never have to), the overwhelming majority would choose the latter.

again, i think that the main reasons for the difference in monetary compensation between those two fields is not our valuing of one aspect over the other, but rather the fundamentally different nature of those fields and how they lend themselves to generating profit.

Id think urgency matters too, people don't think about medical costs till they need medical help. Something we agree is most valuable but we think about infrequently will have less resources poured into it by society over time than things that occur more frequently and are of lesser value and what you get as a result are chronically understaffed and underfunded medical facilities for the public. Thinking out loud here btw, not certain about any of this stuff.

I think that our society has been slowly corrupted to benefit a few extremely wealthy people to the detriment of the great masses.
Why do we talk about "dream jobs" where we bust our asses to make some other person richer but hate it slightly less than the other jobs we were doing?
The way i see it is billionaires are a failure of society, money that should be circulating the economy is sitting in the cayman islands or being used to endlessly expand mega corporations to dodge paying their fair share of taxes.
Does the convenience of amazon mean jeff bezos deserves a hundred billion dollars?
Not to me.
