To add to the discussion, this doesn't affect me since I'm not a poor person who buys AMD

I switched to AMD back in 2004-ish when AMD beat the pants off Intel. :D

I still have those CPUs. I don't remember whether it was the 2800+ or the 5000+, but it rocked the CPU world, at the time.

/e Hell, I still have the actual computer I built that has the AMD 5000+ in it. It still works. :)

Although I no longer have the motherboard, I still have the 2800+ as well...

Although I'd dearly love to blame Obama for this... I don't think he had anything to do with it. :D

O.o I think I put one of those into my fathers PC, but I purchased through a Minnesota local microcenter, so guess I'm effed until I can hop on a local class action?

I bought it for the 8 core hype and because I was happy with my Phenom II x6 1090T, that thing was a beast and overclocked pretty good in its final days.

You're not exactly "effed". The CPU is fine. The suit just concerns AMD's advertising. Your father can still use the CPU, and you can still collect the money. It's not like you have to RETURN the CPU to get the money. :)

They advertised the FX-8350 as having 8 cores, which it really doesn't. It has 4 cores, each composed of TWO modules, hence the term 8 cores. The computer and all CPU programs still SEE eight cores, even though there is really only four.
AMD is known for adapting terminology to make their product SEEM more able.

That's sort of what they have to do with their 3 fabrication plants, trying to compete with Intel's 23 fabs.

/e But yeah, I noticed the same thing going from the Phenom 955 to the FX-8350. Here's another little bit of info.... An FX-8350 running at say... 4.5Ghz only does the same amount of WORK as an Intel CPU running at 4.0Ghz. The older, Phenom CPUs actually DID do the same amount of work as their speed indicated. Aka, a 4.0Ghz Phenom did the SAME amount of work as a 4.0Ghz Intel CPU.

/ee

Here's an example of a program that can take advantage of all the cores of a CPU, running on Windows 7 on an FX processor. You can see that although Task manager > Processes shows all eight cores... only FOUR cores are really doing the work.
