I dont think this is just us becoming lazy trolls or something like that. The quality of the public debate has gone down, and the public debate is a lot more about irrelevant nonesense than ever before. Imho, it's really no surprise that the quality of the discussions in this sub has gone down accordingly.

Timeless topics like abortion or capital punishment have been discussed to death, new topics like free trade or automation are too complex and require too much insider knowledge to have discussions which reach beyond educated guessing, and the daily news stream during the Trump presidency consists of 95% noise which just spurs some shitty memes and lazy partisan hackery, but not much else.
