If this was something that would actually yield significant results, the Obama administration would’ve done this in 2010 when they controlled Washington. Bump stocks are pretty dumb & not really an issue, even the NRA approves the restriction of them.

So basically Trump gets credit for “sensible gun reform” while nobody loses any real freedoms, all while doing absolutely nothing to stop the next psychopath who already has his gun & target picked

Mostly seems like a symbolical gesture to keep the angry at bay.

Iirc he tweeted about mental health/background checks being an issue, is there any lawmaking in process for that?

Nope. America is ridiculously sensitive about healthcare data so the mental health thing isn't going to happen. Republicans have been trying to get the background check system available to the public in order to facilitate private gun sales between individuals (15% of all sales) but Democrats don't want those kind of sales to happen. For now, those people go unchecked.

Also, I found out today that the DC Court of Appeals ruled tri-annual re-registration of guns unconstitutional. To be frank, the 2nd amendment and current legal precedent prevents a lot of additional gun control from happening.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that part. Publicizing people's mental health data in order (or even the background check results) to be able to have private gun sales is quite the legislative wasp nest.

How do you call this type of thing that people sometimes do to set people's minds at ease despite being absolutely pointless/useless?

This is one of those things.

I've never heard of anyone killing nearly 60 people and injuring hundreds more with a truck

Personally I think bump stocks are stupid and I wouldn't waste my money on them however a ban is ultimately going to be ineffective and a complete waste of time but its going to appease the "do something crowd" without actually doing anything. What needs to be addressed are the cracks that been shown multiple times in the NICS system with regards to reporting crimes and mental issues that should disqualify one from buying a gun.

What I'm about to propose is more of a state issue than a federal one but I don't see why there can't be emergency orders to temporarily seize firearms similar to how an emergency protection order or an involuntary hospitalization works. Somebody goes to the county attorney/courthouse and fills out a form. The judge reviews said form to determine if there is cause enough to hold a hearing over the issue. The hearing is scheduled, the police serve the order and seize all firearms for safe keeping. The person has his/her day in court and has the opportunity with an attorney to present a case for the order to be lifted. There is an avenue for appeal available to prevent judicial activism from trampling the rights of somebody who is not mentally unstable. It just make too much sense to me to go this route.

The attacker in Nice used a combination of weapons, including firearms.
