Well off the top of my head, the # of people in prison since the early 1980s is what... 8-10 times more now, but the rate of crime is nearly the same.

They should put those people to productive work.

Such as stmping plates, and 8 hours of things they should do that no one wants to do.

Get some use out of them instead of giving them free time to lift weights. Let them get up at 5am every morning and work until sun down

Now that is real jail

:)

do the crime, and you should pay the price with hard labor

work off your punishment while benfiting the world at the same time.

maybe in the process, the criminals won't want to go to jail for free housing and food.

If I commit a crime, whether it was intentional or not (i.e. manslaughter), I shouldn't have to pay with forced labor if I don't want to. The prison system is fine as it is. The justice system needs a little fixing.

I support this. Though I'd suggest more productive types of labor. Make each prison cater to a specific type of production and start an assembly line.
Those products created or services rendered can be used to fund the state and local governments. Train them to be productive members of society would go a long ways instead of just locking them up for a period of time.

most American prisoners are required to work every weekday
most minimum/medium prisoners work on the farm or maintenance jobs

some do work in industry related fields making license plates/prison clothes, etc

Said it before, its set up to fail, because these are choices of PRIVATE COMPANYSThat Profit by simply having ALOT of people in there prisons......
your more likely to commit a crime while in prison than you are on the outside.... people can go to prison with 5 years and end up having to do 20 because a fight or something like that in prison... So the rule I abide by is "Dont do anything stupid enough to go to prison!"

O and a little bit of change would be if We The People re-took our own Justice System.......

Prison work programs benefit no one.

Exactly, so the prisoners can take over the jobs of law abiding people and put them out of work. That'll show em.

 I wasn't aware all law abiding people worked in plants and assembly lines for production.
Let me know the next time a law abiding citizen wants to pick up trash on the side of a highway in an orange jump suit and can't get a job because a criminal took it from him.
