We've proven a winning formula where we transition to a full service/banking/investment based economy and drop our farmlands and production entirely. No need to offset or replace them. If we consolidate power into three megacorporations who continue to sell each other the rights to future products and intangibles like 'compute' to drive a mutual explosion in net worth, while Russians are out growing fields of rye or scratching in the dirt for potatoes, we're clearly the winners. I mean we saw it in the last US civil war, where the southern states were heavily mechanized and filled with factory production and that's why they lost to the superior firepower of wall street bankers and re-insurance agents gaming the markets. As Rhett Butler said in Gone With The Wind: There's not a cannon factory in the whole south, and it didn't make any difference to any gentlemen because wars are won with quills and balance sheets not shipyards and coal mines.
Let the Russians mine their minerals, harvest their wheat, tap their gas. Heck, figure out the best places for data centers in the southern states and let Russia annex the remainder if they want the dead weight.
That's why common GDP is basically a joke. We have a financialized economy, while places like Russia and China make real things. I always get a kick out of people mentioning 'Russia's GDP is the size of Italy's', but here we are with collective NATO funneling hundreds of billions and the war goes on.
20, 50, 100 years from now people are still going to need metal ore, hydrocarbons (who knows to what extent) and food. While NVIDIA and other companies that have concentrated so much wealth that put large countries to shame may not even exist.
