My understanding is the existing mail in ballot systems being used are vulnerable to either being lost, cast by another citizen, or hijacked and used to obtain signatures from vulnerable voters (Something about nursing homes and the like being targeted). Problems with putting the ballot in the wrong box or people making fake ballot boxes to delete votes.
I'm not sure the risks balance out against the convenience here.
I think it needs improved to reduce these risks. Maga rewind 100 years is equally risky.
Perhaps the old school way favors the manipulation of the Reds and the Blues better at molesting the mail in.
Seems a great use case for a single token Blockchain voting apparatus
The primary issue I believe is exactly as you say, potential in transit tampering, coercion of voters, and fake ballots.
But like a drug dealer, crush one way and they will find another. Fraud will happen regardless, voter booths, electronically, etc as long as there's human involvement somewhere in the process, be it programing a machine or counting and "auditing" ballots from a box. How much, or how material, I don't think we know.
Now just because one will find another way does not mean you ignore highly susceptible areas. Does mail in voting by the actual numbers though indicate pervasive material fraud? If no does the additional susceptibility warrant removing a clearly used system?
I wouldn't think it does, it's likely most rational people would come to that conclusion as well with the caveat of potentially introducing other safeguards.
