The end goal in all of this banter is to get all of these countries to step in line with putting the same tariffs on China.
That's the only way the tariffs work out, or else we are just playing musical chairs shifting tariffs around with each other.
The goal is to put a damper on these countries with massive trade surpluses.

I feel that this was all part of trump’s plan to make himself, and his lackeys, a few quick bucks. Step 1: announce prospective tariffs. Stocks dip. Step 2: Buy the dip. Step 3: walk back on proposed tariffs. Stocks go up. Step 4: take profits.

Everything trump does is for selfish reasons. If it makes him money, he will do it.

No matter what Trump does successfully the left will grasp at straws to deny that success.

No, they are taking this approach because the EU is uncooperative, and if he asked nicely they would just publicly side with China if he requested for them to reciprocate and place tariffs on China.
The tariffs will have little to no measurable effect if its just the United States is alone in putting tariffs on trade surplus countries.

Do you think its only the United States alone having its lunch eaten by China, and other emerging markets?
All tariffs are going to do if its just reciprocal tariffs of western countries against each other is just going to reshuffle the deck of imports and exports.
But if the so called western developed countries act in unison to tariff these 'developing' Asian countries with massive trade surpluses that will shift the balance of losing industry, and hemorrhaging trade deficits.
Trump has to take the approach of a bull in a China shop here if he's going to have any chance at getting the results he wants, that's just how it is.
