The most productive researchers are the ones that can grind it out. Being brilliant doesn't get you far in science anymore.
Agreed. Science in academia is mostly a joke in 2023. There have been no substantive fundamental scientific discoveries for decades and I wouldn't expect any soon - with very sophisticated molecular orbital theory, density functional theory, and particle physics advancement is largely a function of efficient use of computational power.
Entire fields are now largely irrelevant. Synethic chemistry research has devolved into spending years building novel catalysts and hoping they work, akin to throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. Atmospheric chemistry & physics has become nearly totally corrupted by the climate cult, where the field requires publishing biased and flawed research to push forward the narrative, if you wish to pu list heterodox results you won't get funding, nor will you be published.
However, being a genius still puts you leagues above the rest in the private sector when it comes to finances & applied mathematics. A single mathematical genius can write an algorithm in a few days which invalidates years of work by hundreds of subpar engineers.
