I don't know what the purpose is for other types of museums, but I know that for holocaust museums, it is to commemorate the mass murder of Jews. And because of this, they should have been built in Germany, where it happened.

There are tons of holocaust memorials etc in Germany. Maybe they dont need to build many new ones because the literal buildings where those atrocities took place are still there (eg Auschwitz).

Holocaust museums in the US teach about the Holocaust, keep its memory alive, and help prevent similar tragedies by showing how hate and discrimination can lead to terrible consequences.
