I still don’t understand the logic behind black people cannot obtain picture Id cards.
its an old narrative. studies were done that showed in large urban areas black people had less access to DMVs within walking distance, and as a result were less likely to have a driver's license. the same went in some cases for black folks in poor urban areas, but lots of poor people in urban areas dont have IDs. i remember in college reading some materials of cops from places like Mississippi staying it wasn't uncommon to pull over 60+ year old people just to find out they've never had a driver's license but drive every day.
what no one bothered to ask, was if we simply give free IDs (they should be free anyways) and expand access to getting them (possible with things like pop up events where u can get one in urban areas) does the MUH RACISM still have traction. and of course it doesnt. now to be fair, im sure many legislatures that are calling for voter ID laws do not at all want to expand access, its just a new form of gerrymandering. less racism and more pure politics, they're not excluding blacks because they're black, they're excluding blacks because they vote for democrats.
no one seems to whine though about things like milwaukee voting districts, or other large black urban areas which are also gerrymandered the other way. all you get in response is "but but but the GOP is way worse, i think, idk, but thats how i FEEL".
free easier to access IDs with voter id laws should be a slam dunk bipartisan issue, but neither side wants that. the GOP wants to sabre rattle lack of IDs to cast doubt on electoral processes, and the DNC wants to sabre rattle voter id proposals to rile up the base on racist grounds. its an easy fix, shocker we dont get it.
