So if you could pass any law you wanted (pretend for one minute that you are POTUS), what would you do to solve these problems?

Also, what is your party affiliation, if you don't mind telling me.

I have no idea how to solve it. There seems to be a lot of inefficiency around medical codes and procedures. Something easy may be plain English medical services vs obscure matrix of codes and terms to improve overhead cost and give more clarity to consumer. Trump made a pass at this with the 48 hour thing and getting estimations.

Next, maybe an ale carte offering of discrete primary direct care depending on your ailments. Only read about these, never seen it operating in real life.

Finally, address the excessive cost for things like X-ray and imaging. X-ray technology is over hundred years old, yet it defies the curve of becoming more affordable over time.. like a camera. Many strange regulatory aspects could be lifted as well to promote local practices. My understanding is there is somewhat of a good ole boys club to placate to open shop even if you qualified.

Also, dental and vision ought to be part of medical insurance, not separate coverages.

One serious growing problem in the US, very much in my region is health care access in rural communities. It's backsliding to situations where there is no OBGYN for vast territories, limited or no intensive care for baby/todlers, or just lower qualified staff providing health care. Even the big providers out of the larger cities have wait lists for basic services like hearing tests for children. If you are covered, you are paying huge monthly premiums, put on long ass wait lists, and then stuck with the majority of the bill anyway until your insurance calculus decides they've tapped your wallet enough. Meanwhile, billing has bloated what actually happened at the hospital or clinic with obscure codes that someone who has no knowledge of what transpired from a billing office has to explain to you and waste more of your time and administration overhead.

Well, tbh, here we do experience shortages in medical resources. Doctors, nurses, emergency wait time, everything is short. People waiting for months for life-saving surgeries isn't unheard of. But I think the main reason for that is too many immigrants being let in, in too short of a time. I don't think it's the inherent failing of socialized medicine.

So how would you fix the problem of a lot of Americans not having medical coverage? Pretend that you are the POTUS for one second.

Don’t let anyone fool you. the US experiences the same

The jury is still out on Canadian style single-payer, but I don't think it's going to make it. The government can only run healthcare that way by squeezing costs, which brings about mandatory shortages. There are some alternatives with more promise.

Obamacare ushered in the era of state ensured private profit. It's the worst of all worlds.

What do u think private for profit health insurance companies do exactly? Except the squeeze is much harder than the government because naturally the government is willing to spend more on its citizens

I wonder what US wait times would look like if we included everybody who puts off treatment for months/years due to not being able to afford it.

Long lol

If you want a screening colonoscopy depending on where u are in the country u need to wait a year at times.

American healthcare is falling apart actively in front of us, becoming increasingly unaffordable, yet our government and individuals pay more for this “free market” health care than any other country on the planet

And as much as I am in favor or a single payer system…Obamacare, while well intentioned, was a grave mistake but it gave all the power to corporate healthcare because of the EMR mandates. And what did the emr mandate do vs the intention? Intention was to have easily accessible records. Reality ? -> 20 different emrs that don’t talk to each other and it’s harder to access records than before when it was just paper. Meanwhile >25% of private docs having to join corporate health care just to stay alive and work, ultimately decreasing the standard of medicine

The fact that we don't have a federally mandated EMR standard is a fucking travesty. It hurts my brain. It's 2023.
