A neutral Ukraine could've avoided this entire conflict. That means no EU membership, no NATO membership.

Russia did not destroy democracy in Ukraine. The CIA supported a coup d'etat to overthrow the democratically elected government, which ended the country's democracy. There still hasn't been a democracy in Ukraine since then that can make any legitimate claim of representative government over its borders. Perhaps once the war is over and the EU forced by a peace deal to recognize the separatist regions being absorbed into Russia, the remaining western half of Ukraine can rebuild its democracy.
