so efforts to fast track their EU membership have been increasing. currently, scholz (german chancellor), macron (french president), and draghi (italian prime minister) are visiting ukraine and making all kinds of promises.

personally, i think it's a terrible plan. it will put the main burden of eventual re-building efforts squarely on EU citizens' shoulders. it will also be yet another eastern european financial sinkhole for decades to come. while i certainly feel for the ukrainian people, and am willing to do my part in getting the country back on its feet whenever the russians decided to have conquered enough territory, i think it's incredibly dumb and short-sighted to make these kinds of promises, basically signalling the rest of the world that we alone will take care of them. like previous EU expansions towards the east, i'm strictly against it.

it also doesn't do or change anything for them now. the war is already going on, and it's not like the EU was some kind of defensive pact in the first place. it's an economic union predominantly.

It's a promise, for the future. Unlike the Turkey Pro-Islam nativist auhoritarian shit lol.

but it's not a decision between turkey and ukraine, it's not like we're forced to accept either. i get your point, and i'm also strongly opposed to turkey's bid (and recent developments have made it basically impossible for them to join anyway), but the existence of even worse options doesn't make ukrainian membership a good idea imo.

The European Union must decide next week to grant Ukraine this status as a candidate, the first step in a negotiation process which can last for years.

but will Ukraine fill its EU mandated quota of dangerous muslims let in and given govt aid to hang about all day and children's swimming pools? Does the Ukraine even have the required number of no lifeguard children's only swimming pools?

i will say though that compared to the talk about turkey in the EU, that has been going on for a long time (dead at the moment), they at least have an actual claim here

i am suprised you are against it fender, usually you cant wait to just throw our money at everything and everyone

despite the promises an actual membership will take some years until it happens, but i am 100% certain that a shitload of money will flow before that
