Cliffnotes:

Agriculture uses 80% of California's water.
Agriculture is 2% of the California GDP.
Top billionaires export their agriculture out of the state/country (Saudi Arabia just got Water Rights to export Alfalfa, a highly water-intensive crop, it's illegal in their country because it uses so much).
Your water will be limited as a resident based on even/odd address system.
Citizens use 6% of the water supply.

There ya go, now you know how to vote later. Clean em out!

Corporate billionaires aren’t making food for Californians. Majority of their profit is from exporting it. Also totally agree that desalinization should be a supreme focus. All the money the state has and they refuse to invest in the good of its people. It’s a shame it isn’t? There should be projects building reservoirs, doesn’t happen. Should be increasing the amount of high paying STEM jobs in water reclamation, doesn’t happen. And the people of the state are told it’s their fault, it isn’t. California has every resource imaginable but the top top is exploiting everyone to get bank rolled with campaign donations. It’s really sad.

I think the west of the US is tremendously fucked. Water issue wont get any better. Last few years it's been 'pls limit your lawn watering to once a week'. In the future I think it'll go beyond that small sacrifice.

I'm surprised we're not seeing more people moving out of states live California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. I lived in California about 10 years ago and there was a time I wanted to move back, but honestly don't think I would just because of water scarcity.

If people think water is tight now just imagine when the aquafer dries up. It's going to be really bad.

Welcome to capitalism. If it's more profitable to send products out instead of keep them here that will be done, even at the expense of everybody else.

you can make the export vs local market argument, but in the end the food market is global and everyone feeds each other

one place exports grain and imports fruits, another does the exact opposite

california is swimming in tax money, they have the tech monopoly corporations printing money out there, but cant complete simple tasks

investing the necessary money for desalination projects wouldnt even be a lot in the great scheme of things

its almost as if certain people are not interested in solving problems ^_^

Let's just ban California.

The water usage from the Colorado river is stupid. Almond crops and other high water use crops shouldn't be in desert locations.

The problem has never been the cost of building a desalination plant, it's that desalination is an economical last resort due to the energy intensity.

Once renewables are an overwhelming part of the grid it might be viable, but right now it isn't.

ever heard of nuclear power?

you cant supply an industrial nation with so called renewables

in the long run entire landscapes, the local climate can be changed with enough water like in israel

they so have so much water thanks to desalination, they turned wasteland into agriculture, are filling up lakes and rivers and selling some to jordan on top
