It's funny all these things where happening while Mao's purges were killing dozens of millions and while soviet union had wonderful free one way tickets to gulags holidays.
Today US have to compose with their own divisions, powers who also have nuclear submarines with ICBM and are even united in federations-like entities (ie: EU) while Russia is almost completely Isolated and has a very tiny economy.
I don't think it's possible to make strong comparisons with the situation 50 years ago and today. Russia is just a remnant rogue country controlled by gangsters who are threating to annihilate the entire planet because they can't invade and loot a very well done self proclaimed free world country.

1991 yeah. before that it was called "yugoslavia" and during ww2 it was ran by a guy who was fighting on front lines against nazis, was injured few times, send stalin's assassin's heads back to moscow in boxes, and after his death his funeral was one of the biggest funerals ever recorded with leader of every single country in the world being present. one president (not sure who) ended up sick and couldn't participate, so instead he sent his own mother as a sign of respect.
meanwhile french bent over, spread it wide open, and waited for people on other frontiers to win ww2 for them, including russians that gave you a freedom and a country you have today.

fun fact, did you know Paris is such a fkn dumpster trash hole that in Japan it's used as a method to bring people back to reality? they literally send depressed people to Paris so they can see how life sucks dicks in there. they come back to japan much happier and contribute more to their society being thankful that they don't live in Paris or any similar places. check it out.
