In 2020 I preferred Trump but I was very ambivalent. My main thought on the election was that Trump had already done almost all his policy initiatives and would be largely toothless in a second term, while Biden was the most bland candidate ever running a campaign of status quo competency. And on top of that, most of the policy agenda centered on the inevitable covid recovery and even the court picks dried up with Trump getting so many in his first term. So my assumption was that 2020 was actually the lowest stakes of an election in a long time. Didn't really matter who won. Well, I was wrong. Pretty damn wrong. In 2016 I thought Trump would be a carnival barker selling snake oil that couldn't possibly deliver on his promises and would fall flat on his face. Instead he actually shat tiffany cufflinks and lived up to his promises. In 2020 I thought Joe Biden was a boring non-entity that would preserve the status quo with unimpressive normalcy. Instead he fell flat on his face, crapped his pants and plunged the country into crisis after crisis after crisis. He's making me pine for the relative competency of Jimmy Carter
