Union contemporaries- who fought the war- had more respect and civility than those generations removed and with nothing at stake. A seething animus that wasn't going to stop at Robert E Lee or Richard Dowling or other confederates, they went full anti-American and took on Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, you name it. You can't find an offering to appease them, a line they'll draw and call it a day. People who are radicalized enough to declare war on inanimate objects aren't people you can reason with, they don't have needs to be fulfilled, they don't have a governing self-interest you can appeal to. When people protest for their own rights and well-being, you can compromise to improve their lot in life and strive towards equality like the civil rights movement. When people campaign out of hollow vitriol and baseless grievance like the social justice movement, there is no satisfying them and they will always escalate and always eat their own.
