https://nypost.com/2021/12/01/smoking-crack-cocaine-sanctioned-at-nyc-safe-injection-sites/

NYC is now officially operating the nation's first government authorized, private nonprofit illegal supervised drug use site. Such places have been more common around Europe, but none have operated openly in modern US history. Many obviously exist without official sanction, and even with the recognition of police who simply don't enforce the laws- George Floyd Square and its surroundings come to mind- but NYC is making the bold move to have the government operate one. Philadelphia last attempted one in February last year, but it was shut down by neighborhood opposition before the plan could take off. While other cities have debated it, Philadelphia actually attempted it also back in 2019, the private nonprofit organization Safehouse trying to open one with government recognition. And that attempt was scuttled by the Department of Justice, who filed a civil lawsuit citing that operating supervised illegal drug use sites is itself illegal under the "Crackhouse Statute"
And what is the "Crackhouse Statute"? 21 USC ยง 856, which forbids the opening, leasing, renting, using or maintaining of any place for manufacturing, distributing or using any controlled substance.
Codified into law in 1986 in the Anti-Drug Abuse Act, it was authored by senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. It was amended again in 2003 in the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act of 2003, again authored by senator Joseph R. Biden Jr- the amendment expanded it to include temporary use and add civil penalties.

Now comes the showdown. Will President Joe Biden's administration enforces the federal law of the land that was written by Senator Joe Biden?

honestly i think a bunch of tweakers sitting in a room with each other and being forced to confront what they are collectively as a group may cause more people to quit than them all individually hiding in basements somewhere or using under a bridge. and with narcan on hand maybe a few less ODs.

but its a minor move, it wont cut out use bigly, just as most things wont. we live in a world of users and will continue to.

In terms of the practical impacts for users, I can't imagine much difference between the officially sanctioned site in NYC versus the wink and nod non-policed sites in most liberal cities that already exist. We'll have to see how the NYPD chooses to respond to drug selling and violence at a supervised use site, as per the hamsterdam analogy. But the real issue here is that NYC is facing off against the Biden administration and directly challenging him on a policy with his name on it, on which he's been pressed in the past. Its like they're pushing a school bussing policy to see how he'll respond. This has been one of Biden's signature pieces of legislation throughout his career, and it was a very easy choice for Trump to enforce it in Philly. Now its Biden's turn in NYC, and Garland must do his bidding. If Biden chooses to bend the knee to the radicals here, it would change the trajectory nationwide on policies of tolerating and decriminalizing drugs.

this seems a non-issue to me. Biden and modern dems are itching like a heroin addict on day 2 of a withdrawal to rid themselves of any legislation seeming to be dated. non-enforcement here is easy for Biden to get a "cj reform" win. if i were biden i'd just say im listening to the GOP and letting states make their own policy and stopping federal overreach on a local jurisdiction. and i dont think sales will/should be permitted, that will kill this fast, but who knows.

Our city of 450,000 has about 250 safe injection sites and it doesn't help. The junkies are so out of control here with stealing and destroying property because of the drug crisis that the citizens have started taking matters in to their own hands because the police are so overwhelmed with calls they rarely ever respond. Now there are Facebook groups set up where people post their videos of beating the shit out of junkies with baseball bats etc that get caught robbing people houses in attempts to make sure they'll think twice before trying to steal from someone. The other day I watched a video of 2 junkies trying to steal pot plants out of someones backyard (legal here in canada to grow) and they got caught. One guy got an aluminum baseball bat to the side of his knee and back before he hopped the fence, and the other got cornered between the fence and shed and got the baseball bat to the skull before they cut the video.

The city thinks nothing is wrong though :)

Studies have shown a safe place to use and dispose of illegal drugs makes the streets a safer place. I 100% agree with this.
You might not like President Biden but insulting will never replace a valid argument. Try again.

but if you haven't done an in-depth study of the numbers then you really don't know besides your own personal experiences which is never enough to generalize.
