Ive been reading a story about progressive das that are soft on crime. How bad is the situation really? On the one hand it seems like career criminals dont get locked up until they kill someone and on the other hand id think its a good thing we dont waste time prosecuting for minor offenses. Also reading this could just be misinformation.
Anyone here live in San Francisco?
https://www.kqed.org/news/11853808/working-as-hard-as-i-can-sf-district-attorney-chesa-boudin-on-his-challenging-first-yearSan Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin filed manslaughter charges Monday against Troy McAlister, a parolee accused of killing two pedestrians on New Year's Eve while driving drunk in a stolen car. The case has sparked intense criticism of Boudin, including a recall effort for his choice not to prosecute McAlister's multiple recent arrests leading up to the deadly incident, instead referring the arrests to state parole officials.
The controversy caps the former public defender's challenging first year in office and spotlights his contentious relationship with law enforcement.
Boudin, the son of former radical leftist activists, won the race for district attorney in 2019 as part of a politically progressive wave of prosecutors in cities across the country committed to restorative justice over mass incarceration.
https://jkalven.medium.com/dont-believe-the-lie-that-da-boudin-is-not-bringing-charges-4e8a8c2a1fe6In fact, Boudin’s office filed 4,300 new criminal cases last year.
This is going to be a long post, one that gets a bit into the weeds. If you don’t have time to read on, just remember this: “Boudin is not bringing charges” is a lie, plain and simple. It’s one that I see every day in online neighborhood forums. And one that Sacks has been shamelessly repeating over and over again in different venues. (If you’ve heard the separate claim that Boudin isn’t holding enough trials, scroll down to the very bottom to learn why that is misleading too.)
