Economy was awesome etc things we're pretty good pre covid but given all the Trump hate and the pre-covid polls I figured he was in for an uphill battle, but after such a close race and no blue wave I have to wonder--would he have just cruised into a wipeout win had covid not hit?

edit: also there is the issue of campaigns being different less debates/rallies would Biden have held up cognitively doing more in person live stuff etc

I wouldn't say the economy was "awesome". It still had the problems it had under Obama.

Gig economy was still on the rise as people couldn't get stable work that paid enough to make a real living, stock market was up but that wasn't falling to the lower classes, big companies continuing to merge and banks taking huge risks, etc. etc.

but I do think that Trump would have moonwalked to a second term without Covid. I think virtually any president easily walks into a second term unless something similarly earth shattering happens.

You can always get steady work, but you can't always get steady work that pays enough to live comfortably. There's a reason the gig economy is as high as it's ever been, because for a lot of people that's all that's reasonably available.

You should frequent the jobs subreddit or the resumes subreddit. You'll find a glut of qualified people looking for entry level work and coming up dry for literal months.

I think less about if Covid hadn't hit at all and instead think about if Trump had taken a scientifically-informed approach rooted in strong leadership in response to Covid. If he had, I think he would have won this election. Covid became one of many pain points for Republicans where they had to come with the terms of their ideology v. the candidate. I've met many Republicans who, due to the 2-party system, feel really torn this election. They recognize the Right/Left divide, but they just cannot get behind Trump. I think even among many Trump supporters there's a sentiment that he's...unconventional, to say the least, and not in the "He's not like politicians!" kind of way.

Trump made the mistake of politicizing Covid-19 when it should've been an apolitical issue in the first place. The Rose Garden Superspreader and Trump getting Covid himself was a bad look.

Believe me, we'd be happy starting out making what our parents started out making. My mom made $20 an hour in 1988 as a seamstress. Those kinds of jobs just don't exist anymore in America. I'd love to make $44 an hour working on a factory line sewing jeans lol
