Idk how a nation can acknowledge an event took place and then deny that it happened and remove the memorial but here we are 😐

Russian activists on Thursday removed two plaques memorializing the Stalinist executions of thousands of Polish prisoners of war 80 years ago, following orders from local authorities who claimed there is no evidence of the crimes.

Prosecutors in the city of Tver, in an October 2019 order to remove the plaques from the former Soviet secret police building, said their inscriptions were “not based on documented facts.” The Soviet Union in 1990 took responsibility for the 1940 murders of nearly 22,000 Polish officers — including 6,000 in the NKVD secret police building's basement in Tver northwest of Moscow — in what became known as the Katyn massacre.

The communists murdered millions and millions, 22K more or less makes no difference.

Nobody cares anyway unless the nazis would be to blame for this, in that case we would see worldwide protests organized by people with purple and blue hair.

I think it's more about out of sight out of mind rather than rewriting history.

Everyone always wants their 'own' to be viewed as the good guys. Difficult to do that when you have plaques about mass murder our grandparents committed.

I know but the EU doesn't care. They believe cheap labor is a good thing hence they are constantly trying to expand their influence east. Albania is next on the list, flirting with Ukraine failed though.

I'd say it's important not to get lost in nationalist ideals, germans have a reminder they weren't always the good guys with the holocaust memorial and it's valuable that newer generations understand the mistakes of their past instead of believing their country has never done wrong.

I agree but most places in the world don't operate under western ideals imo, that's why we are better and i say this as an immigrant that came to the US.

I think not talking about the atrocities is more common than it is to talk about them. Like it's remarkable the Russians even had the plaques for like 30 years. There's a lot of Polish-Russian resentment cropping up once again, in part due to Ukraine and Nato, that's why i think there's a move to take the plaques down.
