Friday night AG Barr announced that SDNY US Attorney Berman would be resigning. SDNY has investigated various Trump-related matters... it's one of the most important US attorney offices in the country. Berman was appointed by a panel of SDNY judges because Trump left the position open for so long.

And.... Trump has said that he will appoint a new AG to fill the post, AND get Senate approval which is how is should be done.

In short the only shenanigans here are Berman's. Seems he's another player with TDS.

Actually Berman was assigned the acting position by Sessions, and later on the judges appointed him because Trump left the spot open for too long.

There are definitely enough shenanigans at play that nothing can be taken at face value. The SDNY has long been the most partisan political attorneys office in the country while insisting its not. And its highly unlikely Barr intended to blindside Berman by announcing his resignation without his submission, which means we're likely looking at either miscommunication or intentional hijinks. Its supposed to be the responsibility of the president to appoint Berman's replacement as soon as possible and Trump has the power to fire Berman at any time- Barr does not. So there's certainly something wacky going on with this story, but I don't think we're in a position to know what exactly that is. Yet.

But if the goal was to 'purge Berman' in some forceful action, uh, Trump could have just done that unilaterally.

to be clear- assistant US attorney Audrey Strauss become acting US attorney immediately, while Jay Clayton's nomination to become US attorney for SDNY is pending in the senate, his fate largely up to Lindsey Graham
What happens to Geoffrey Berman, who was previously offered the head of the civil division of the DoJ, is now unclear. He might be completely out of a job.

so apparently barr does not have the ability to fire berman
but barr sent a letter to berman stating that trump has personally decided to fire him since he won't resign
but trump says he had nothing to do with any of it
