Just came across this phrase that seems to be a common theme amongst the people who are tenants resenting their landlords for taking part of their paycheck.

I was a student for several years renting in w/e city i happened to be in at the time and never spent more than a quarter of my monthly pay on rent so can't quite relate.

Is this just general resentment of the wealthy by poor people?

When majority of society cannot afford a place to live it should be illegal to profiteer off multiple properties.

"Major housing shortage" "Oh I'm gonna buy a second/third/fourth property and rent them instead of working" . Hear this at least a few times a year. Sickening.

What's wrong with lending something out in exchange for monetary compensation

I can rent tools at home depot that would be prohibitively expensive otherwise

Have never heard anyone say that and I have quite a lot of friends who rent.

Land lords or slum lords?

Big difference in this context.

I've rented from both. I have a friend who has successfully sued the company I rent from for serious negligence. They tried to evict me after I paid my rent once because an employee stole the money lol. I will in no way get my security deposit back under any condition.

Poor people are pissed because being poor costs so much. They literally pay a dollar a gallon more for milk, dollar more for bread, can't get shit grown from the earth itself half the time because they can't drive to a grocery or can't carry all those groceries on the bus. It fucking sucks. Buy all your food from fucking bodegas.

perhaps you dont know what majority means. the USA has a homelessness rate of 0.2%, which is even high compared to industrialized nations.

that includes people both sheltered and in shelters. housing shortages are a regional, not national, issue. and mostly in VERY high cost of living places such as San Fran or Manhattan.

You can make a reasonable argument that landlords dont add anything of value to society. They maintain accomodations but that can be done cheaper by the tenents or the landlord wouldnt make a profit. Still, that ignores that the landlord also assumes risk by owning the property. In an absolute sense landlords add nothing and are parasites but in practical terms their job is maintaining the property and managing the risk of owning the building and allowing or disallowing risky neighbors.

In some cases, like when rentals are in high demand, they can charge ridiculous rates and not fulfil those roles and still have high demand in which case they are parasites.

There's nothing reasonable about that argument.

They supply housing for people who either don't have the credit to buy their own home, who don't want the commitment, who maybe want to live in a neighborhood/city/state temporarily.

The relationship is largely symbiotic and voluntary. No one is forcing someone to live in NYC and pay 2 grand for a 1 bedroom, they can easily move to Wisconsin and pay 1/3.
