Turkey didn't appear to care when they started stomping all over American allies in Syria, why should America give a fuck what Turkey thinks about our recognition of their atrocities?

Pretty much.

Turkey was only able to attack because we let them. Our government collaborated in all that.

to be fair, that one is almost exclusively on trump. many senate republicans were (obviously for the wrong reasons, but still) critical of that.
and while this step is very transparently an attempt to show that america is not entirely erdogan's bitch, it's still undoubtedly the right thing to do from a historic and humanitarian perspective.

There's a difference between telling the Turks "you can attack them" and "we're not going to stick around any longer and you might recognize an opportunity to attack them without risking killing Americans anymore."
