In one of the weirder political deals of the decade, the Trump administration is set to achieve two of its major policy objectives by leveraging two completely disparate concepts to bring congress on board.
The purported deal is that the new defense bill with authorize that all 2.1 million civilian federal workers get 12 weeks of paid parental family leave for new babies after birth, adoption or the initiation of foster care
And in exchange, the Space Force would be official established as a new branch of service carved out of the Air Force, but remaining in their department for now, akin to the Marine Corps / Navy relationship
Space Force has been an objective of Trump's platform, where paid family leave was Ivanka Trump's main objective and adopted into Trump's platform, previously a longtime Democratic policy objective.

So uh, what?

I would expect nothing less. I was under the impression that it would be mandated paid parental family leave for everyone except really small businesses though?

12 weeks is near the top of what I see at the best private companies, not bad.

I'm enlisting in space force.

A moment of record low unemployment is the perfect time to introduce such a benefit. In this economic environment, the chance of private sector businesses following suit is highest, and the government can need such an attractive benefit in its competition for recruits on an increasingly tight job market.

This is a good issue to break with Republican orthodoxy, and getting a big policy priority of his own achieved in exchange is actually a win-win for Trump. Well done!

Only for federal workers... Meh. Nice but not really something major if that's the whole scope
