https://miami.cbslocal.com/2017/12/15/elderly-woman-arrested-florida/

93 year old woman arrested for not paying rent for 3 months and refusing to leave
While some my think this is terrible i wish things could move this fast up here where i live

Sure there should be saftey nets in place for old people but outside of that the rent needs to be paid i say

What do our resident pardians make of this story?

laws that protect squatters are nothing but the govt outsourcing the homelessness issue to the public. same goes for vagrancy laws. why try to fix something when you can make landlords, police, social workers, etc pay for it?

I have no problem with governments allowing squatting in buildings that are intentionally left empty and could be used for housing.

I pity the old lady. She's probably pretty lonely. Better elderly care would fix that.

many cities are filled with such buildings, Detroit/Flynt for example. the problem comes from youths.

cops stop enforcing on squatters, homeless move into empty homes, kids also start drinking in homes knowing cops aren't patrolling, kids start fires or destroy homes just for fun.

for years i thought the homeless villages would be a fix, small houses made from basically scrap recycled wood. but each and every example i've seen ends up with drug issues, fighting issues, etc. even those with a zero tolerance policy end up with the issue of how to kick people out. it's a sad sad state of affairs.... combining no money with medical issues, mental issues, and drug problems is a bad bad thing.

so say if someone is developing a property using their own hard-earned money, and it's 'a building intentionally left empty' while repairs/updates are being made, anyone can squat there since it could be used for housing?

If there's development under contract happening, I don't have a problem with it. Plenty of buildings standing around empty just for housing market speculation though. That's what I do have a problem with.

Sounds like you have a problem with property rights?

Like most rights, property rights aren't absolute.
