After 2 years and a week, it appears the Gaza War peace deal has held and looks to be stable, with the first batch of Israeli hostages being released from Hamas captivity
7 of the remaining 20 living hostages are now confirmed released by the IDF, with the remaining soon to follow
1718 Palestinian prisoners who were arrested after October 7th, but not involved in the attacks, will be released. And an additional 250 prisoners sentenced to life in prison, mostly for terrorism or murder unrelated to October 7th.
In the two years of war, about 2000 Israelis and 60000 Palestinians have died, and unknowable amount of civilians among the latter

And all this was only achieved after a sustained pressure campaign by Donald Trump, who is en route to speak at the Knesset.
There are still some last minute fine tuning of the terms of the deal even as the swaps are underway, Hamas agreed to sub out 120 requested prisoners involved in the attacks for 120 others, and a handful of high profile Fateh prisoners were excluded and instead substituted for Hamas prisoners at their request. I tried reaching out to Hezbollah to see if they would keep on fighting but they didn't pick up their pagers

All 20 remaining living hostages have now been returned and are confirmed alive and in Israel. The body swaps are still underway. The past day has seen some intra-gaza infighting with dozens killed in clashes as clans opposed to Hamas vie for control or whatever other reason. A notable Hamas social media influencer was shot dead and families of clan members abducted.

We can't be sure nothing will go wrong from here, but the hostages will be back either way. Even if everything goes right, there's no firm agreement on the future of Gaza. And with some internationally recognized coalition administering it, there will still be a bombed out hellscape reliant on foreign aid.

The show must go on. I expected persecution and killing of Hamas members after the "peace deal". Imagine, you were promised freedom, your own land for attacking and keeping Israelian hostages in Gaza. The result: 70% of Gaza destroyed, all hostages released, no change to the status que of an open air prison for Palestinians. Approximately, 60-70k dead during those two years. I'd be mad as hell as well.
The clue is to stop the emergence of an even more radical group after the Hamas downspirale. I expect a more radical group to emerge anyways. The situation of the Palestinians hasn't changed, it's just a question fo time.

Its more likely that it doesn't get dark tonight, than we will have a lasting peace.

Jan 2009 Operation Cast Lead - A ceasefire was declared by Israel and later accepted by Hamas, following an Egyptian-brokered agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 1860.

Nov 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense - A ceasefire was brokered by Egypt and the United States, ending a week of heavy fighting.

Aug 2014 Operation Protective Edge - A long-term, open-ended ceasefire was negotiated in Cairo, ending 50 days of conflict.

May 2021 Operation Guardian of the Walls - A ceasefire brokered by Egypt and other international mediators ended 11 days of conflict.

Aug 2022 Operation Breaking Dawn - An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire ended three days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

May 2023 Operation Shield and Arrow - An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire ended five days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

Oct/Nov 2023 - 2024 Israel-Hamas War Multiple short humanitarian pauses and a major week-long humanitarian pause (November 2023) were implemented for hostage-prisoner exchanges and aid delivery, but a comprehensive ceasefire proved elusive for many months.

its a lot easier to broker a peace deal when both sides are desperately tired of war, that said a middle east peace deal is never easy to broker under any circumstances. one side is a death cult, the other is a murder cult. pretty hard to get peace when both sides are basically willing to fight to the last man from the leadership. but mounting protests in israel and an ever increasing starvation and thirst crisis in Gaza basically tipped the scales to the point a deal could be done.

id say its very comparable to the Abraham Accords. Trumps regime got all the public credit, when in reality it was just two sides that were secretly working together putting pen to paper and making it open. the war itself in Gaza has been done for a while, this just makes it official.

Does this mean England, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Netherlands can boot out all the "asylum" seekers now?
