With the onset of Ukraine/Russia conflict as well as elections in the US we have seen an unprecedented proliferation of deepfakes, fake news, AI generated slop that cause outrage and trigger people to act.

We’ve always known state actors have been doctoring documents to facilitate their propaganda since the dawn of times, however in the modern day and age - cost of production of these confusingly convincing pieces of media is going down rapidly while quality becomes indistinguishable from the original.

Since we are firmly heading down a dystopian path of being unable to distinguish whether something is real or doctored on the Internet- how do you plan to pick a side?

I am not that worried about deep fakes.

People in the comments are good at recognizing them, Community Notes will take care of the more important ones and maybe there will even be an additional icon or label in the future informing upfront that something was reported as fake.

Also, back in the day people were worried about photoshop manipulating pictures to the same effect and I don’t see this being a serious problem now.

I was more worried prior to the freedom of speech era, when we had scripted news and no other good source:

Im pretty sure the last phase of AI is when diablo 2 players use an AI service to make graphics work for the trophy room instead of paying hard working graphic artists to do the layouts instead. cant go any further than that!

We have those all over PaRD as well. They parrot all day long the corporate news bullshit. It's weird because PaRD is a small gathering of people and yet, most people are literally what you see in that video of yours. I blame shitty parenting . If you're a parent and let your kids use a device and go online for more than 30 minute a day, you're a shitty parent. A good parent wouldn't let their kid get the same brain rot they have and give them a chance at life
