the evidence of Jesus as a historical figure is overwhelming, no serious historian questions that
for the evidence of Jesus' divinity I ask what type of evidence would you be interested in?
one common cited evidence is Jesus' empty tomb. it's historically accepted that Jesus' tomb was found empty, and Roman leaders as well as the Sanhedrin would very much like to have Jesus' body to mock his attempted blasphemy.
Desecration of graves was punishable by death in Rome at the time, it was an extremely serious offense and Romans had every reason for Jesus' body to remain.
when I ask about more detail I am saying what type of evidence would you want? When you say "lack of evidence " what do you mean precisely?
I agree that, while not proven 100% of course, that evidence leans heavily towards the historical man Jesus existence and I, as a rationalist, see this as the best possible explanation.
So yes, we can agree on that. Jesus existed more likely than not.
As for the rest of the claims, the divinity, I dont even know were to start. Not even is there no evidence of Jesus divinity, there is also no evidence of divinity being a thing at all.
The historical Jesus existence is pretty much agreed on, because there is a bunch of very serious and believable historical pieces of scripture mentioning a person with this name. It wouldnt make a lot of sense to mention someone in lets say "office documents" without it being true.
As for the divinity claims, they would need entirely different quality of evidence to back it up of course. An empty grave is not exaxtly that. Let me tell you a story:
For example, if someone tells you he has 10 bucks in his bag, you might believe him without proof. The evidence of him saying that is very likely enough for you to believe him just because it makes sense and isnt out of the ordinary.
Now if some other guy tells you, he got a million bucks in his bag, you'd probably need to see it to believe the guy although the story was the same. Its a more extraordinary claim this time. But at least you know that a million bucks theoretically exists. So its at least possible as far as you know.
A third dude now says he has a trillion bucks in his bag and also has 20 people around him claiming they saw it and that hes right about it, you probably would still not believe it, no matter what those people say, cause thats not realistically possible in your opinion.
That bag wouldnt be big enough to begin with, at least not as far as you know. That claim is outside of what you think could be possible. This dude would be the richest dude in the world by far and just carries this around in a bag? I mean, they say its true right? But wheres the proof? Any evidence leading to this conclusion? How did he get so rich, who even is this? Does it make sense?
