A federal state is essential for any large landmass.

The choices are as follows:

1) Federation (obvious choice)

2) Balkanization (we all know how terrible and weak this is)

3) Totalitarian centralized control (who the hell wants this?)

EU tries to take a 4th option - a bastardised pseudofederal state with the de jure capital in Brussels and the de facto hegemon of Germany. And it isn't really working out.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this but at least 25 countries practice federalism. It is not solely an American ideology.

Please define what you understand by federalism.

In the early days of the US, the term "federalism" referred to the proponents of stronger centralization, in particular creating a central/federal government. Simply put, to the creation of United States of America as opposed to a loose association of sovereign states.

In the EU, and often times also in contemporary American discourse, "federalism" refers to concepts such as the subsidiarity principle, devolution and the like. Simply put, it refers to a preference for as much power as possible being moved away from the central government and toward the lowest possible level, e.g. the nation states (EU), the federal states (US, Germany, Austria) or even the county and municipal level.

I'm a big proponent of federalism in the latter, contemporary sense.
