Hi everyone !

i know trying to get a photography biger would change the quality, and for a vectorial picture this would not affect the quality ... but my question is about a photography of an oil painting ? for example, if i have it in 120dpi quality and like size 20x30cm, will i reduce the quality if i use photoshop to get 300dpi and like 40x60cm ?

cheers

I might be able to help, is this something that can be printed? It definitely will be reduced but there are MINOR ways around it but as Mr Pond said the quality will be sacrificed.

those will have to be printed indeed, this is why the quality is important.

what about if i have a file (still a picture of an oil painting) in low quality (like 120dpi) but bigger size than the requested size for printing ? it seems i have some pictures with 120dpi and size like 20x30 or 30x40cm ... i will need them to be printed in 5x8cm and possibly in 12x17cm ... if i change those files into a 300dpi and maybe use ai to do the thing Mr Pond is advicing, will this be a good option ? ;)

Thanks for helping mates !

If the end result is 5x8cm / 12x17cm that is more than enough even at 150dpi to be able to retain a decent print based on your original pictures. I would say it can be anywhere from 240-300dpi at best case and acceptable is still around the 150dpi range if that makes sense.

well the upscale still holds true from what was mentioned above, its more so a tight walk game of if it is "good enough" with the same range of dpi and will you notice or care. As the enlargement isn't THAT much.

The other scenario was a downside scenario. There are also ways to semi-mask the enlargement quality loss as well. Harder for me to voice via text.
