One way to downsize is to open in something like photoshop and just resave as another .gif but with less colors such as 256 so that it still looks the same to the human eye on a standard display, but takes up much less bits to store the file.

I like to see people asking about this, even if it is in the D2R discussion. As we need more people to play with avatars/signatures. It's part of the personalized and social experience.
