I've been sort of new to the game. Played it briefly several months ago and just installed it again.

Which character is best for me to advance deep in the game with?

Would a cannon shooter be viable for high levels? I've been using melee (swords) only.

Depends on what you want to do, PVE or PVP

In PVP, Spear is the best atm endgame, with battlestaff and dual sword being good as well. Bow and Psaw are also good if you know what you're doing. The best main changes alot though

In PVE, it depends on what you want to do, TBS, Dungeons, etc. Almost all the mains have a strong point. Only mains I don't really recommend are axe, gun, and cannon main. Theyre not very good at the moment. Cannon can be alright if you're doing alot of TBS though
