Can it be min/maxed further with greater investment? If so, how and at what cost? It looks fun, but as you said, a bit clunky.
Its as clunky as any other gladiator retaliation build. Usually is just a gameplay hurdle to get used to the blocking -> using 1 cast -> running -> using the saved casts. Kind of keeping that loop.
One thing gladiators have is qol in being able to use the retaliation skill without needing block and being to be able to store charges.
For further improvements would just be more life, global crit multi and life.
Some improvements you can go for: Focused Amulet (Life / Global Critical Multipler), Adorned setup with Corrupted Magic Jewels with (Life / Global Critical Multipler), Mageblood with triple resistances. (example:

Let me know if you have any other questions. This build as it stands is able to do any content, abusing block change and a shit ton of recovery with a large life pool, and being able to skill off life makes it good all rounder.
