Supposedly Elyos is easier to play than Asmodians. I always enjoyed playing as Asmodian though. Depending on which server you pick, it might be best to pick the more populated race.
This sort of matters when it comes to Fort Sieges (This is the end game). If there aren't enough of your race, good luck doing any of the end content.

What is your play style like?

I personally enjoyed playing the Ranger. (You get to pick this at lvl 10)

At the start of the game you get to pick between 4 classes. Warrior, Scout, Mage, and Priest.
Once you hit level 10, you get to pick your 2nd class.
Warrior can be either Templar (Tank) or Gladiator (Damage Dealer)
Scout can be either Assassin or Ranger
Mage can be either Sorcerer or Spirit Master
Priest can be either Cleric or Chanter.

Explaining the diffrent classes:

Scout; - Leather armor
Assasin - Pure DPS, Uses melee weapons such as dual daggers / dual swords. - They stealth to sneak up to their opponents to deal quick dps.
Rangers - Pure DPS, Uses Bow. Strong solo hero, as they can kite basicly everything that uses melee attacks. - (My main is a Ranger, i love them)

Warrior; - Plate armor
Gladiator - DPS/Semi-tank - MAINLY using Polearm. (Few people use Greatsword, Dual one-hand swords/mace) - Great and heavy DPS, also able to tank in most places.
Templar - Main tank in game. Not the best DPS, but its still strong. Uses Greatsword to DPS and Mace/sword + Shield to tank. You can switch this up how you like. I've met plenty of templars with mace and shield in pvp. They just wont die... ever...

Mage; - Cloth armor (Both classes uses Orb / Tome - weapon) (Tome has higher Magical accuracy and lower Magicboost, orb has the opposite - Its normal for spiritmasters to use the tome, and Sorceress to use orb)
Spiritmaster - Using pets to tank for them in solo and deal extra DPS in instances, the spiritmaster is a very fun hero to play with. Most spells are DOTS. Very usefull in pvp. - They also got fear and dispell attacks to really mess with their opponents.
Sorceress - Heavy burst DPS. Can sleep & root target to get away or channel their most powerful spells.

Priest; - Chain armor
Chanter - Chanter are a mix between Support and dps. They got "low" dps and "low" heals. but combinding this into one character makes him very powerful! They got great Support spells that boostes your team in everyway. They are very much appriciated in groups.
Clerics - Main Healer ingame. You dont do anything without a cleric! (almost) - They can also be used to go pure DPS in lategame and are VERY strong while doing this aswell. However, its not as much appriciated as a cleric that heals.

Whilst playing the priest class, you are always welcome everywhere :)
