earlygame sorc's a fair deal easier to level, you have a higher level of control over the mobs from your range of CC skills, and pking < 40 isn't hopelessly frustrating (twinks not withstanding).
lategame, sorcs start to lose out in terms of dps, but they get a few huge nuke spells. you'll probably see everyone else crying about Lightburst/shadowburst & lumiel's wrath. 4k dp, 1hr cd skills. but unless you're a bad who just uses that skill and then hides in town for an hour, it's not a major advantage.

earlygame glad is kinda annoying to some people. I found it refreshing after playing so many casters. you can taunt and tank in the absence of a templar, although you have lesser capabilities in terms of salvaging a situation where shit's gone bad, than a templar does. you also lack empyrean armor, but it's still a good all-around dps class that can multirole in party.
lategame, glads tank better than templars imo, and you get quite a few powerful stigmas. The downside, on our server at least, there's so many glads that the good/rare stigmas are obscenely expensive and hard to obtain. you'll also have a bitch of a time fighting >good< sorcs before you get unwavering devotion, and a chunk of powerful skills after lvl 40.

sorcs can also whore elites solo for gg drops/xp, ive managed to solo a few elites on my glad but nowhere near the same efficiency nor capacity that a sorc is capable of.

I'd go with Sorcerer. I personally went Spiritmaster because I love having pets. (I come from playing the Hunter in Wow) PvE is very manageable and quite fun. Just watch how you dump your mana pool and you shouldn't have much downtime.

templar is not bad at all in PvP. I'm only lvl 40, but as far as i can tell everyone are having problems ganking and killing me. Tho the templar's DPS sucks, so it's pretty taugh to kill someone and not let him escape if you are alone. I heard at lvl 50 they get pretty insane.

what i would suggest your friend would be a chanter. You wear chain and are a melee class, as well as giving buffs and healing. The DPS is really not that good for soloing and it's taugh to kill shits (which makes it kinda taugh to level with grinding) ... but if he plans on leveling with you or in group, that would be a nice combo imo !

cleric or chanter are both great support classes. i prefer cleric as their heals dont get interrupted as often as a chanters.

templars are still considered the best pvp class in the endgame, it just...takes a...long time and these guys are pretty high-cost class (if not the most gear dependent eh...but i loved this class when i played in the korean server in lvl 50 matches)

chanters are...yep very powerful as well (though I feel like all classes in this game are powerful in their own rights... wouldn't you agree?)
