i know the question was not aimed at me, but i would recommend a fairly hybird class like druid or paladin (my main is a druid)
mostly so you can just respec your talents and get a feel for the different roles.
i may be wrong, but any game that i play i tend to have my first main as a "test" character, try a bit of everything (except proffessions, that would be expensive )

and from there on out you can choose what type of play-style suits you best. (druid i like because it has all 4 roles, (tank, healer, melee dps and caster dps)
although all different tanks and healers are totally different types, remember, its just a test to see what you like

but anyway, less wow, more aion

...I was asking for which class would be suggested both
A. To be like a resto druid
B. To be the exact opposite - Melee DPS - Was thinking gladiator maybe.

Chanter is a backup healer, with great group buffs and decent damage end game. Assassin is the best melee dps, gladiator can take a lot more then, in terms of damage towards them.

So if i were to make a melee first, would u suggest assassin or glad? I'd be aiming towards pvp eventually.

are templars good?

Itz: Templars are awesome, my RL friend plays one for his main. I haven't played a chanter, I play cleric. But I really love to heal so I'm sure I'd like either.

Assassin's are better gankers and this rise abyss rankings faster. Galads are better in a group.

Waitwhat? Assassin is only effective melee dps when takin' a boss. They only get to go through their rotation once in pvp before cd so... Glads are plenty more dps when you're droppin' high level templars.

Chanters have pathetic late-game dps. They can only hold their own by slotting crit and fucking PRAYING for the staff 2h kb. Their buffs are beautiful though, despite the mana upkeep.
In the Asian servers, assassins are consistently the highest in pvp ranking so if you're into that, go 'sin.
