The thing is: monthly payment guarantees about 99% certainty of good game support and regular updates. But that does not mean that it's not possible without the monthly fee.
Twist and turn it as much as you want; the monthly fee is not needed to pay up for all the time they spend on the game. They just use that as an excuse to fool you into paying it. BUT as long as the game is actually worth paying for, there's actually no problem.
