I was told that a Chanter with Mace/Shield is the best choice for a Support Character, one that buffs and assists heals/DPS and can take a fair beating in heated situations.

Is this a good class to go with? Or should I look elsewhere?

Yes same with Clerics. Everyone needs clerics but you will need to learn to be good with healing others if you go with Cleric.

And how do you make a weapon glow? What enhancement value does it have to be at before it starts glowing/has a particle effect? Or is a weapon glow acquired by other means?

Also, what are the best two professions to master for a Chanter? I was going to go with Alchemy for sure, not sure about the second one, either Handicrafting or Armorcrafting is what I'm considering.

Chanter and Clerics are the two supports classes atm.
A full support chanter can manage to heal the majority of the 6-man instances today without a cleric. (If good).

Your weapon will not glow because of enchantments, only by godstone effects. (Unless it glows because of its skin)
For example; Water damage godstones will provide you with a blue glowing effect. Fire damage godstones, with a orange/red-ish effect.

If you are planning to craft for your own benefit there are a few.

Alchemy: Mainly potions and scrolls. (You can also craft Orbs and tomes for Sorceress/Spiritmasters). - This is a very good craft method to earn kinah (Your ingame value)
Cooking: Mainly Food and "Drinks".
Handicrafting: Craft Accessories and Staff (Also bow). - (Not worth it if you are a starter, I use it to craft balic weapons. Its very expansive and hard to aquire)
Armorsmithing: Chain and plate gear.
Weaponsmithing: Mace (Not worth it).

I wouldn't get crafting to craft gear for myself in low levels. Its simply not worth it. You can't buy all the recepies either from the merchant. They have to be found, quested towards or bought from other players/Broker.

I would start with focusing on Alchemy, Essencetapping and aethertapping to later on craft Running scrolls, Castspeed scrolls, Attackspeed scrolls and manapotions.
All ingreedients required for this can be found from Essence and aethertapping aswell as the Merchant next to the crafter for the additional ingreediences. (Potions needs additonal ingreedients which can only be found, bought from players or "morphed").

I was also told Cooking is a good one to go with because of DP foods later. Should I master Cooking on a first character?

No. You'll benefit more from Alchemy.
Master the alchemy in my opinion.

The DP food can be bought cheap and is not used as much as potions.

Okay, so Alchemy, and then what would benefit me more? Handicrafting, or Armorsmithing?

Keep in mind, I plan on running Mace/Shield as my primary, not a staff.

You will most likely not craft for weapon and armor. You'll grind instances and quest for that in endgame.
Only crafts thats worth doing are the "balic" once, and they are a pain. Trust me.

But get Alchemy and whatever you want. Get the weaponsmithing for future crafting etc.
