extremely flat; poor rendering, and the values are inconsistent from left to right

I suggest you read some tutorials - there must be some floating around that can help you achieve something similar to this

It´s kinda interesting but this concept is overdone. Also, the whole thing doesn't really blend together. Keep working at it and look up some photomanipulation tutorials, you might learn a thing or two that will help you along the way.
