I'm trying to make a heightmap from a picture of a crater on mars. For those of you who don't know what a heightmap is, it's a raster image used for determining the elevation of terrain in 3d modelling. The short explanation: I need picture 1 smoothed enough and the contrast altered enough to make it similar in style to picture 2. Essentially, I need the general features of picture 1 to be visible with all of the finer details left out, as well as the colours altered to be a little more extreme (darken the blacks and lighten the whites).
How can I do this in photoshop cs5?

You tried layer adjustments?
Such as Intensity, contrast, levels and curves.
Ctrl + L for levels.
Ctrl + M for curves.
