Okay it's been a while since i've been able to post anything out of NDA, & started working on this a couple of hours ago.

It's void of branding, as that's the way i seem to work these days, crafting around the content & then coupling with branding.

But i've started on a project with a friend of mine, Giving people information about the lifestyle of food (including but not limited to recipes) & creating blog posts around particular themes such as dining at a restaurant and then making an adaption of the dish.

if this is going to be a blog - why don't you make it a blog? why make a website and then use disqus which has spam and other problems?

also - i think this feels way too big; i'm on 1920x1080 and i can't see the name of the dish and all of its instructions on a single page. could you imagine looking at something like this on a phone when you're in your kitchen?

There is a thing called responsive design, I'm sure Dan has thought out different screen resolutions.

Overall looks good, great use of negative space, I personally love minimalist designs so I might be a tad biased.

this was my first though as well, i had it on my normal person size screen and i couldn't see shit. Since its an imagine it wont autoscale content or anything but yeah definitely something I would dislike if I was on a webpage that looked exactly the same

e/ i also don't see a printer friendly button anywhere?

Cream is missing from the ingredients.

im fairly sure the butterscotch is missing in total, given the ratios.

You guys are harsh, I like it, a refreshing change from yes men.

Also I forgot to note this a preliminary design that I spent around 2 hours on.

Because I want to use disqus :) rather than dealing with shitty tools.

The content area is 960px which would fit on 99% of desktop's with at least 32 px padding either side, i presume you are talking about the height?

Do you have images scaled up or something?

I can't understand why anyone would want to look at the name of a disk and content at the same time?

Also as someone noted it will be responsive, so it will scale down nicely for mobile use.

See above.

Also thanks, I have an internal debate about each element on the screen.

I have a smaller resolution & think it looks fine, not seeing the issue ? O_O

Yes, the height. I like being able to see the name of the dish (does it interest me?) and the recipe at the same time (do i have the ingredients + other stuff to make it as well?)

Also:
When you actually design the header and do your gaussian blur using css3 or whatever, don't drop support on devices/browsers for it.
Someone mentioned printing ... so don't create elements on the page that mess up the page print.

I don't think a pretty design matters much for a site like this -- focus should be on accessibility and content.

I think you missed the main point of my comment; I gave him a specific media screen range and told him I didn't like how it was so large height-wise. Yes... you can do responsive design and change how it will look on different devices. That's not really the point of what I was saying -- I was concerned about the amount of whitespace from the top to bottom regardless of device.

Cool, I usually always refine my y grid when coding & might be able to reduce the h1 font size also means I have to do relative sizing math urgg :P.

I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about with the background image? there is a way to target how a website prints, so I can just turn that off. see http://coding.smashingmagazine.com/2011/11/24/how-to-set-up-a-print-style-sheet/

It's not really about the pretty design, but i do like to present the information in ways to inspire the right feelings.

The folly of mine in design that I have to work at is that I dislike using harsh horizontal lines & contrasting elements, because there are so hard to use perfectly.
