Yes, they're pretty bad.
That's the reason why everyone advised you to read tutorials.

You can find tutorials on http://deviantart.com as well as on many other sites.
As far as I know there's also a thread with a lot of tutorial links somewhere on d2jsp. I don't have the link though.
