I've been looking around here and would love to be able to do what you guys can, any tips on where to start would be wonderful thanks.

theres a bunch of tutorial links here on jsp, but also on deviantart.com

I do have Photoshop. And should I just search "tutorials" on deviantart or is there a trick to only getting good ones? Also, do you know where the tutorials listed here are? I looked but haven't been able to find any.

how informed are you on most ps tools?

I've taken two beginner classes on Photoshop, so I know how everything works in it. But of course they didn't have us making sigs or anything like that.

make a progress thread or start here

post every sig you make, and have people cnc your work. Dont get discouraged by the criticism either, but rather accept it and build off it.
