Okay, I have already my opinion about that and I am pretty sure about it.
I also worked in a publishing house and this is even more a confirmation for me.

However, I want to be even more sure, so I'm asking your opinions here, without telling mine, ofc.

That's the question:

If I take a font that is under license, not free, and I just use few letter of it (like to make a title of a book or something)
and I hardly modify these letters, am I still prosecutable about its license?
With ''hardly modified'' I mean: proportions of the letters, outlines, shape, adding effects like cuts etc etc.
Basically a brand new font just based on the shape of that old one.

Yes or no?

Thanks! :)

If you have purchased the font under a standard print licence agreement you can use the font without altering it if you wish, altering would be fine also.

Web is another story, and the complications lie in font licensing here.

From what it sounds like you wish to create your own font but do not wish to start from scratch. If you intend to use the edited font for profit and they can see that you used their font as a base they can still prosecute. I am not 100% certain though.

Depending on the licensing of the photograph… font's fall under another category, look at ANY logo with text in it, it's a modified version of the original font almost always, logo's are printed everywhere

if you are editing the font, and then intending to sell the font(as a font file), that would be against the standard print font licence.

I see what you say guys, but once these ''vectors'' (not images) are modified these are actually not the font anymore, don't you think?

Morally, isn't fair, but actually nobody can proof that you design your vectors starting from a specific base. You can state that you handmade them.

The fonts licenses are for text use. Modifying a whole font is a huge work and requires competences too (not about the ''creative'' part only). There are optical rules to be follow.

But, as many do, if you just take few letters and you modify them there is actually now way to be prosecuted...
