I've been using Photoshop for quite a few years now, and I've never really gotten any better.
I'll pick it up for a little while here and there, use it for what I need, and then stop using it for a while and forget anything that I had previously learned.
I just can't seem to produce anything that I like, or am proud of.
I can't help but to make these new-age "borderless/popouts" as they are appealing to most people looking for a quick simple sig, that, and I lack the ability to produce a quality sig in general.
Here's some stuff I've made in the past month or so, after picking PS back up for the first time in a few years.

I always have issues blending the renders in, adjusting lighting, making the sigs flow well, perhaps it's just not for me.
I really enjoy playing around and learning new things in PS, but I never really seem to get anywhere.
What's my first step?

I prefer DB_Odin's version but it got shrinked down from imageshack so there's this tut

and most beginners are always pointed towards this one http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=senthrax#/dwrqoq

it just takes time man. and it takes some effort.

you have to want to be better.... constantly be looking for ways to improve and new techniques..... find a sig or LP that you like and figure out WHY you like it. then strive to achieve those similar effects

I'll be sure to give these both an in-depth read over and try to grasp these concepts.
There were a few tutorials that I had previously followed that were also shrunk from imageshack, it's a shame.
Thanks for posting these, very resourceful and informational.

Time and effort I can do, I just feel that I need to learn more about each tool, and different methods, which hopefully the things that Skeletal has posted will teach me some more.
Do you know of any nice galleries that I can look at to try and find a style I like?
I've looked through peoples premade galleries in the sticky in Gfx REQ forums and I haven't found any styles I like, most of them are sloppy and low quality.

your style wont all of a sudden click and happen

it takes time, you will pull different techniques that you try and after a while, will naturally use these tools etc etc

just check out different sig tuts on here jsp, deviant art, tag freak

tut after tut after tut. youtube some stuff also if you want ot learn specific tools

I have a ton of LRO psds saved from a bunch of different people, I don't know what I know (which isn't a lot) from just one psd or a set of psds by one person, it helps to get a good number of styles to learn from and eventually develop your own from what you've learned which won't come quickly, just set your own pace and follow feedback and tips given (people might be a bit rude but if they see you actually want to improve they will usually help) just don't be a bitch when someone says your tag sucks because likely it won't be amazing in the beginning (not trying to demotivate you)

sorry for this tl;dr post :P

That's not long at all.
I take criticism just fine, if my work looks awful, I usually know it before someone can tell me. I'm very picky when it comes to graphics, and it's near impossible for people to make me sigs that I like, so I just stick to making myself crappy ones.
What is LRO?
I am truly, sincerely trying to learn and get better, once I've got something down that I'm comfortable with, I'll post some sort of progress thread.

LRO is Learning Rights Only, people let you download their psd files so you can see how they make their signatures, also means if you use their psd don't steal layers from it, it's only for you to learn, not to steal
