Figured this would be a nice tip to help some of the people here that are trying to learn smudge. I posted it in my guild chat and figured I would share because it's so useful no matter what kind of tag you're making. It can be used to accent renders and do some real interesting stuff.

Before painting lines to help the edges

After painting lines to help the edges

I didn't do anything else to it, no additional smudge or sharpen. Just use a 1-3px hard round brush( play with the fade and stuff if you don't use a tablet). It can be used to paint certain spots on a render as well. When I'm done with this tag for my request thread I'll do a render example.

Render Example

Without Lines

With Lines

Pretty big difference for something really simple and quick to do.

Doesn't look good at all tbh.
And no, I'm not saying you can't combine smudge with brushing to create stylistic tags, but doing it like you're showing just looks bad.
If you want additional shading, do it with the smudge tool, that way it'll at least look decent if you do it right.

What's the difference between painting a shape or line and smudging a line if the goal is the same though?

/e

I'm not saying don't smudge for details though. Just saying this is a way to get a little more detail in your images. Like accent what you've already done.
