how do i remove the white background from an img in gimp?

it shows the black n grey checkered background and is supposed to be transparent, but ewhen i uploaded the pic it showed w/ white background... how do i remove that?

not sure about where the exact options are in gimp, but your problem is in the saving.
you need to save it in either .gif or.png format, other formats will not allow for image transparancy. usually you will automatically get an option to preserve transparency when saving an image as gif/png, but i'm not sure how gimp handles it.

i tried as a png and didnt work
so gif should then?

It might also be the site that you're uploading them to
I use imgur, and when I upload a png image, it looks like this:
http://i.imgur.com/QL0kb.png

For some reason it shows the white bg there, but when posted anywhere else it's how it should be
Apparently that only happens when you view the image directly and refreshing the page does nothing to fix it...

Not sure if it's the problem you're having but it sounded similar, hope it helps

imgur tends to lower the quality of images to free up bandwidth
it also clears all the exif data
